Introduction to Social Computing

Introduction to Social Computing
01:15 - 01:45 PM
The roots of social computing date back to the earliest human communities. From the earliest walking tracks emerging from the repeated tread of unknown pairs of feet to the selection of the most popular modern restaurants, the combined 'votes' of the community, however expressed, have 'computed' the outcome.
There have always been 'connectors' who seemed able effortlessly to connect with a broad range of contacts, and 'influencers' who's opinions lead those of their fellows. With the emergence of new software tools (known as WEB 2.0 or Enterprise 2.0) that enable on-line communities to emerge and interact, we have entered a new era of software enhanced virtual communities sparking increased and widespread communication, collaboration and productivity. This presentation provides a thought-provoking introduction to the history, context, and successful application of social computing both within and beyond the firewall.
